Historical series, long shot.

I remember an old historical series from the 80's or early 90's in the pre revolutionary France, "Dangerous Liaisons" style. Not sure if it was a French production, English production or any other country production.

And a hypnotist appears in one of the episodes, not sure if Mesmer himself. I remeber a quote: "He raise his hand over a woman and she suddenly sleep". We are watching it in my aunt home, little Espadachin having "feelings". One of the characters, the pretty villain invite him to her quarters and ask for a demostration on her maiden. And then... we had a powercut. Never ever spot that series after that moment.

My first thought based on the description is Balsamo, which focuses on the imagined life of Cagliostro. It was actually presented in three parts, but each part varied from three to nine hours and was reshown in sixty minute episodes.
