For all the love I have for songs, one of my favorite things is to see old made new, or updated, or reimagined. To that end, I thoroughly enjoy a good remake/cover/sample of a song. So feel free to post a song/video in this thread that caught your attention with how well the cover was pulled off, or how well the artist involved the original lyrics/score in the new track, or whatever. Also -- if you like multiple new versions of some song...great... The inspiration for this thread lies in a stream of consciousness generated by fantasy baseball. One of my outfielders (who's on the real-life trading block) is currently banged up, but hopeful to play soon. The player in question is Brewers OF Corey Hart. The name would sound familiar because of the unrelated Canadian pop singer from the 80s who scored a cult classic hit (and one of the top synth riff hooks ever) with Sunglasses at Night. That's been a song that I've always wondered if anyone came up with a good sample/cover of -- so I went a lookin'. Found this hidden track from a Ludacris record (or perhaps only a mixtape; I'm unsure how far this song got). Not such the fan of all the lyrical stylings on this -- but the (slightly tweaked) hook on this track is wicked:

notable wisdom from a Fear Street book review site In Emma's opinion, the only way to deal with Jason is to give him a cut of the money. That way he'll be happy and no-one will have to die! Judging by the number of pages I have left (77) I predict this won't go smoothly. Conclusion? This book is piss.

Well, I don't know if you can 'cover' an ancient blues standard, per se, but they certainly didn't write the song, and this is as good as it gets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk#noexternalembedEric Burdon fucking crushes it.

Istanbul, I heard the original many years ago, had never heard the cover version until now. Enjoyed both in all honesty, certainly a very good cover.
Torn, had only ever heard the Imbruglia version, didnt even know it was a cover. Far prefer the cover version I must say.

Check out the acoustic version of it from Anne Preven, the original singer, Steph. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo7HUYr7aro#noexternalembedShe puts a lot more emotion into the words than Natalie. I like Natalie's version, too, but you can hear the pain and the sharp, rough edges of the feelings in Anne's version. Natalie's smoother rendition was always going to be more successful commercially, though. Bnap: How about a cover of the cover? Only a few years after The Animals released their version, this came out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mj8xrrcxYQ#noexternalembedThat's gotta be the nastiest lead guitar sound anybody was playing in 1969-70. Right up there with Hendrix' Strat. I'm pretty sure it's a Les Paul he's playing there. The wah-wah rhythm guitar was cool at the time, but I don't think it aged as well as the modulated mayhem of the lead guitar. How about the Foo Fighters tearing up Gerry Rafferty? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0VIJ4Tbg9g#noexternalembedLyc

My musical knowledge is both highly limited and highly idiosyncratic. I can think of some really bad covers I've come across... "Walk like an Egyptian" cover by the Puppini Sisters: Some covers I like about as much as the original.... "99 Luftballons" by Goldfinger: And some covers are way more awesome than the original... Russian national anthem by Lyube:

Lyc, Yes, I have to agree, I much prefer that version of the original to the first one you posted of Torn. Also found an acoustic version by Natalie that definitely takes some of the sacharin edge of the pop version, could happily listen to either of those in all honesty. So didnt (in advance) want to like any cover version of Baker Street, but that one I did. Its a clever play off from the original, and I do love the sax solo, but yes, I enjoyed that far more than I expected to. KA, I've heard worse cover versions than the Puppini Sisters, but agreed, it isnt great! 99 Luftballons (Red Balloons), I had much the same feeling as the Rafferty song, but again I got a pleasant surprise. I do prefer Nena's original German version to the English one, that just works better for me. But yes, I did enjoy this too. But agreed, that version of the Russian national anthem is super, really thought that was brilliant. Thanks all, for much enjoyment Oh Lyc, another version of Baker Street, which was a minor hit over here, but may not have made it to the US. At least it kept the sax solo lol. I'm not saying its good, unless you are into tinkly synth stuff though! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq9XykJ-Po0#noexternalembed

Alphax: I can't believe I spaced one of my favorite remakes! The "official" Korn video has the band as feral dogs who eventually find a strip club in the badlands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q-k-uN73Gk#noexternalembedThe imagery from that video should inspire several MC stories. Also, you gotta love that it was Levar Burton in the original video by Cameo. I always wanted him to put on the Star Trek visor at the end of that video. KhakiAchilles: The Russian anthem was great! I usually only hear that being sung by large groups of people in a very military fashion. Steph: There used to be a live version of the Foo Fighters doing Baker Street on YouTube (I think it may have been at Wembley) where they had some local kid (pre-teen, I think) up on stage doing the guitar-for-sax part and the leads with them. He was very good. There's a crappy video (with equally crappy audio) of it on there now. I don't know where the good one went. This is the ugly one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJvqg_BJpbM#noexternalembedIs it considered a remake if you have half of the original artists playing with you? (Can't say that I blame Dave for taking over on the drums on this one.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRBsgRYPR-4#noexternalembed

If you want a cover that throws a totally different 'political' image to the original, this is probably it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNBjMRvOB5M#noexternalembed&feature=avmsc2The fact that this is a totally amazing video probably helps as well! Is it just me, or does the statue of liberty woman look a lot like Mrs Obama?

Song is Go West, Pet Shop Boys version if you can find it. Has a very different feel to the Village People original
