BBC says...
Six gunmen have been shot dead by Indian security forces at Delhi's main international airport, according to airport officials.
Security had been strengthened at several Indian airports after warnings had been received of possible attacks.
The reported shootings follow last week's attacks on Mumbai in which nearly 200 people were killed.

I believe it was the Telegraph that had a story yesterday about how the Mumbai terrorists were pumped on cocaine and LSD (blood samples from their corpses confirmed it), to keep from needing to sleep or eat during the stand-off gun battles. East meets West!

Didn't opium and LSD and those types of hallucinogenics come from the far east? Wouldn't that be east meets even further east?

Opium is not cocaine. I think opium is a soporific. Cocaine largely comes from Central America (Columbia, predominantly).
LSD was discovered in a lab in Switzerland in 1938.

Opium is indigenous to the Afgan region.. practically its grow your own weed Looks like Pakistan will have to once again demonstrate how they're not the problem I wouldn't recomend Opium to combat troops....as it will slow reflexes and push the guy toward sleep. There are other drugs that will give a high and keep the guy alert...(not that I have tried any!)

It's just that: Cocaine: Western hem LSD: Western hem
I thought I was on terra firma with the East meets West comment.
If I read a story about the Mumbai terrorists shooting Afghan opium and smoking Siberian tiger scat in the next 24 hours, I'll post a link.

Note, I was asking questions, since I didn't really feel inclined to go research the orgins of modern hallucinogenics. I just know that Opium originated somewhere before it got to us.. Opium dens in China and all that...(not that that's where it came from, but .. well, anyway!)

Why was opium even brought up? GHB's post mentioned cocaine and LSD. Opium wasn't mentioned until Chase mentioned it.
And opium is not a hallucinogen. Its a numbing narcotic.

I don't really believe that any of us can change all that much. We are who we are, and if challenged to be significantly more, even for a short while, it wouldn't work out. Our better angels might have wings, but they can't carry that much weight.

Because it's a drug? I seem to recall LSD being used by the Beatles and some Hindu priests or some shit, so without any further research, asked about LSD and opium for coming from out east. However, thanks for this short history of the orgin of drugs! See? I used you for my own foul purposes! MUhahahaah.

The use of drugs to help with these kind of activities goes back a long way. Traditionally, our word 'assassin' comes from the Arabic word for hashish. Having just checked with wikipedia, here is what they say about the origin of 'assassin':
'It is popularly believed that the assassins were under the influence of hashish and opium during their killings or during their indoctrination, and that assassin derives from hasishin, the influence of the drugs. However, most Islamic scholars now think this unlikely, and favor the etymology of assassiyun, meaning people who were faithful to the foundation (assass) of the Muslim faith.[5] Another possibility is that they were named hassansin, after their leader, Hassan-i-Sabah. Hashishinnya was a term used by Muslims and Mongolians to characterize this cult.
'The earliest known literary use of the term "assassination" is in The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare (1605).[6][7]' (interesting)
Opium comes from opium poppies, which are native to the old world. I have seen opium poppy fields in the Golden Triangle in northern Thailand. Interestingly, the Hmong hilltribe people who grow the poppies smoke the opium, but supposedly do not become addicted.
Opium was spread into China over the objection of the Imperial Chinese government by the British, hence the Opium War.
Opium is a real help if you have dysentery. An opium plug will really plug you up.

Opium is very much from the East. And I gotta tell you, it's more fun to smoke than pot. I tell people often that the hardest drug I've ever done is pot, and it's true--because I've had opium. Talk about mellow. Hell, it even smells good! Only had it a few times, but it was nicer than weed.
Coke, on the other hand, simply doesn't taste any better than Pepsi, which even Coke's taste tests prove tastes worse than Pepsi. Only brand loyalty and stupidity keep Coke selling well. Oh, and there's a drug with a similar name, which is a product of the leaves of a tree growing in South and Central America.

Figures that a guy made of french-fries would know all about Coke and Pepsi.
Now, somebody post something else in some Contro thread, so the above isn't the last deep thought for posterity.
